The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal

by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz

Why am I recommending a non-sales book as the first entry in our book club? After all, this is a sales academy, right?

Here's why…

Since I read this book in 2003, my career has followed an exponential curve upward. I bought into the philosophy that life is a series of sprints and that understanding one's own energy level is a key factor to daily performance and happiness.

Regardless of your skill level of professional selling, The Power of Full Engagement will raise it. This book is packed full of real-life case studies and personal stories of how other professionals have overcome their day-to-day challenges by incorporating some very simple habits into their daily lives. These anecdotes and examples of celebrities that learned to manage their energy to excel in their fields make this book a fun and easy read.

These anecdotes and examples make this book a fun and easy read.

So, check it out and implement a few of the ideas.

Received the book, struggling to find the time to read, I’d imagine the answer may be contained within the book. Let you know how it goes.

Mike – you can’t find time … you gotta just do it and figure out the rest!

This book has been a game changer for me. When I joined Vector Firm, I told Chris I was goiong to apply some of his “rituals” that he often refers to on Acedamy sessions or in live workshops; afterall, we need to practice what we preach, right? Several of the changes I adopted are based on the managing energy principals found in this book. I have to say not a day passes that I don’t refer back to or share with others something learned from reading and reskimming it. It is one of two books that I carry with me whenever I am on the road traveling.

Jim Loehr is best known as a sports psychologist. He specializes in helping top athletes get to the top of their game. In the book, he introduces the idea of the “corporate athlete.” It’s a great concept when we consider how top athletes treat their diet, exercise, sleep, and rest. Unfortunately, top executives don’t follow the same regimens. Execs all too often work long hours and pay little mind to sleep, exercise, or a healthy diet. By taking a page from the habits and rituals of top athletes, business professionals can optimize their work output. Ultimately, this leads to better performance and results at work. This book is perfect for someone who has fallen into the trap of long work hours, sacrificing sleep, eating fast food at the desk, and ignoring personal relationships.
